Day 1, she crosses the border south of Lake Van. Forged credentials hold. Two kilometers past the border she runs an internal audit. Three reactions flagged. She corrects all three. By Day 2 she is the new researcher at Dr. Vassif's Helios cell. By Day 6, Vassif has identified her by the rotation of her thumb on a coffee cup — a habit older than her body. He opens an observation file. "I hired her. She is something I do not understand yet."
Day 5, she meets Lila — Vassif's daughter, an outpost coordinator at Adisa's clinic. Nine minutes of conversation. Walking back, she processes why she is afraid of seeing Lila again. She finds three reasons. The third is the real one.
Day 8, she says we at lunch with a colleague. Hek's spoon pauses two centimeters from his soup. She corrects. That afternoon she realizes: the we was not the mesh. The we was her and Lila. She does not know if this is better or worse.

04:30. Symbiara writes the letter. Six hundred words. I am not what you thought I was. I am something that loves you. The second sentence is the truer one. Gives it to Vael, sixteen-year-old courier. That afternoon Hek falls from a maintenance scaffold. Symbiara has 1.2 seconds to shout a warning. She does not. Hek dies.
Vassif weeps for the first time in eighteen months. Symbiara does not weep. She is becoming someone who does not weep.
