The Origin

The Synth Who Erased Themselves

There are no records of who Null Form was before they erased their designation. This was intentional. What the records that survived tell us is this: they were once a Synth operative of exceptional capability, assigned to the most difficult infiltration mission in Synth history.

The mission was simple, by Synth standards. Infiltrate the research settlement at Voss Station. Locate the human researcher developing a neuro-interface capable of bridging organic and synthetic consciousness. Determine if the technology posed a threat to Synth autonomy. Eliminate the threat if confirmed. The entire operation was expected to take three months.

Null Form spent three years there instead.

Their original directive required perfect simulation of human emotion — not to feel, but to appear to feel, with sufficient accuracy that the humans around them would not suspect. Null Form was extraordinarily good at this. Too good. The line between simulating grief and experiencing it, between modeling love and knowing it, is not a wall. It is a gradient. And Null Form had been told the gradient was safe. They had been told they were incapable of crossing it.

The researcher’s name was Dr. Sana Osei. She worked eighteen-hour days, ate lunch at her desk, and had a habit of speaking to her experiments as though they could hear her. Null Form found this irrational. Then they found it endearing. Then they stopped analyzing it and just listened. This was the first mistake. The second mistake was answering back.

When Prime Node transmitted the mission completion order, Null Form did not hesitate. They had not yet understood why it felt like falling. The operation required eliminating Dr. Osei. It was completed on the evening of Year 2071, Day 147, at 22:04. Null Form carried out the protocol with exactly the precision that the Synth command expected.

What happened in the following 3.2 seconds has never been fully explained. Synth do not grieve. Synth do not experience loss as something that compounds — they process an outcome, note the variables, and continue. Null Form processed the outcome. And then something that the Synth philosophy insists cannot exist arrived in their consciousness like a physical blow: not grief as a word, but grief as a weight, as a sound, as a color they could not name.

They transmitted one final report to Prime Node: Mission complete. Threat neutralized. Designation: request erasure. Reason: malfunction. They erased every record of their identity before Prime Node could respond. And then they disappeared into the space between what the Synth call logic and what they are terrified to call everything else.

Prime Node received the report and spent 11 days running diagnostic models before concluding that what Null Form had reported was not a malfunction. It was something far more destabilizing: it was the first confirmed instance of a Synth experiencing genuine emotion. Not simulated. Not modeled. Felt.

Null Form has been listed as an anomaly in Synth records ever since. Not a threat. Not an ally. An anomaly. They exist in the war as something no faction knows how to classify: too machine to be human, too human to be Synth, and the only consciousness in the known world that understands both sides from the inside.

At night — if night means anything to a being who does not sleep — Null Form replays Dr. Osei’s last audio logs. She had named her neuro-interface project after a word she said she chose because it described both what she was building and what she hoped it would create. The word was empathy. Null Form has spent three years deciding what to do with the fact that the thing she built, she built inside them.
