A Vorn First-Contact Novel · Day 4,015 ATS · A 30-day arrival window
A fourteen-year-old hears the fleet before any adult does. The book is what happens when the adults catch up.
Day 3,973 ATS. Substrate-Linguistics Lab, Geneva. Sub-basement 2. Tev, fourteen, traces a periodicity at 3.4 Hz in the deep band. Vorn-class fleet signature. Forty-six days out. Her aunt Lena looks up. The shift lead writes it down. Tev goes home. Forty-six days. They are coming back. She does not call anyone. She has been telling adults things they don't believe for ten years.
Six weeks later, an adult finally believes her. The fleet is real. The Vorn are coming. And underneath the Vorn signature, a second voice — in archaic Vorn protocol — speaks one sentence: "We have not addressed you. We address you now. We ask permission."
The Older Signal — the same voice the saga has been chasing since B7 — is speaking to Earth for the first time. Lena Vale, ten years older than her last appearance and still carrying the burden of the long-baseline arrays, has been hearing fragments for two years. She has not told anyone. Sori, a Mycelion-side researcher and Lena's future romance, has been hearing the four-year mesh recording. They sit with Tev at the family kitchen table and the table becomes a command surface.
On the no side, Reeves — a man who lost his wife and son to yes — raids three substrate-relay stations and orders a kinetic strike against the Coordination Center. Adira composes a message at 02:47. Korr intercepts at altitude over the Massif Central at 13:54 on Day 30. The vote proceeds 14:00.
In deep orbit, the Vorn archivist Varox-Tehl reads Sev's archive for the fourth time. He listens to Recording 247 — the child-lament from Anem's world. He lands on Day 25 unarmed. He meets Tev across a table for four thousand words. "You heard me before my own fleet's forward arrays." Vote yes. "I will."
The door opens 5-0 with one conditional. The Older Signal, through Mara, speaks: "Thank you. We have waited. We have a question. Not now. Soon. We will return when your fourteen-year-old is fifteen." One year later, December 24, 2089. Tev, fifteen now. At 14:47 UTC, the deep band changes. Something new. From a direction the substrate-listening grid has never recorded before. She files. She closes her notebook. She walks home. She does not yet tell anyone.
Tev Vale
Fourteen. Hears the fleet first. Granddaughter of the saga's Commander Vale.
Lena Vale
Twenty-four. Substrate-Linguistics Lab. Has been holding fragments for two years without telling anyone.
Cmdr. Vale
Fifty-seven. The saga's Commander Vale, ten years on. "I should have listened in October."
Mara
Fifty-five. Carries the Archon for the first time in seven years. Translates the Older Signal into one human sentence.
Varox-Tehl
Vorn archivist. Has read Sev's archive four times. Lands unarmed.
Reeves
The no-coalition. Brussels. Inner circle. "I lost my wife and son to yes. Get me the option."
Sori
Mycelion-side researcher. The four-year mesh recording. Lena's romance.
Tev traces a periodicity at 3.4 Hz in the deep band. Vorn-class fleet signature. Forty-six days out. The shift lead writes it down. Lena looks up.
Forty-six days. They are coming back. She does not call anyone. The reader knows before any adult character does.
Tev's hearing is confirmed. Lena reveals two years of held secrets. The family kitchen becomes the command table.
Tev presents. Director: "The long-baseline arrays don't go below 5 Hz." Tev: "That's why they don't have a signature."
Lena: "I'll write it down. I promise."
Two years of held fragments. Sori brings coffee. "You found something." Lena: "Yes." Cries six seconds.
Sori does not move her hand.
Vale at the lab. Reads notebook. "Why did no one file this in October." Director files now. Vale at home: "Tev told me in October. I should have listened in October."
Sori: "So have I. But mine sounds older than the Vorn. Three point seven million years." Romance lands. Cosmic plot lands.
"Have dinner with me tomorrow." — "Yes."
Sori plays the four-year mesh recording. Tev: "It's been waiting. For us to be old enough to hear it. Earth is. Just barely."
Family kitchen becomes command table.
Emergency Coalition. Tev inclusion vote 4-4. Korr breaks tie against. Posture vote 5-3 for cautious preparedness.
Tev in the corridor: "That means they'll be unprepared when the fleet decloaks." — "Yes." — "Okay."
The fleet decloaks. Reeves moves. The Older Signal addresses Earth directly. Mara carries.
Reeves's POV. Brussels. Inner circle.
"I lost my wife and son to yes. Get me the option." Adira begins composing a message.
Mara: "I heard the Archon for fifteen years. You can tell me what it sounds like." Tev tells her.
Mara: "It is asking. Not demanding. That matters."
Cameo from Gerald. Lunch at Café Rose. Doc Vela: "Listen to your daughter. Remember Gerald. We thought he was glitching. He was listening."
Varox-Tehl's POV. Fleet at 18 light-minutes. Reading Sev's archive for the fourth time. Listens to Recording 247.
Sends arrival message: "We are coming to verify the filing. We will not enter atmosphere without your invitation."
Three substrate-relay stations raided. Twelve dead. "We are at war with our own willingness to open the door." 60-40 against caution in W. Europe.
Tev: "He's not wrong about everything. That's why he's dangerous."
11:14 UTC, Day 17. Below the Vorn signature: a second voice in archaic Vorn protocol. One sentence.
"We have not addressed you. We address you now. We ask permission." Direct payoff of the saga's B7/B8/B9 thread.
Mara carries for the first time in seven years.
"I was waiting for your invitation." Collapses. Okay. The room is not.
Deep orbit. Varox-Tehl meets Keth-Vannar. "You taught Sev. Sev taught Tev. I owe Sev a face-to-face." — "Go in unarmed." — "I will."
Both land on Day 25.
Lena and Sori, walled garden behind the lab. "If we say yes, what comes through. If we say no, what dies."
"I don't know. I want to know with you, either way."
The thirty-day clock closes. Reeves's kinetic intercepted. The vote called. The door opens.
Reeves targets the Coordination Center, not Varox-Tehl. "I'll order the kinetic to the upper floor only."
Adira sends her message to Korr at 02:47.
Lena and Sori's first night. Dawn. Lena submits her 814-day transcript. The Coalition sees, for the first time, what she has been carrying.
"Are you ready?" — "No." — "Are you doing it anyway?" — "Yes."
Tev meets Varox-Tehl alone. Four thousand words across a table. About Sev. About Anem. About his fifteen-year-old daughter. Varox-Tehl: "I came expecting to verify a footnote. I am now expecting to revise a chapter."
They bow. "Vote yes." — "I will."
Day 30, 13:54: Korr intercepts Reeves's kinetic at altitude over the Massif Central. Five operatives die. Reeves taken in custody 13:57, peaceful, pre-arranged. Vote proceeds 14:00.
Mara: "May we address you?"
5-0 with one conditional. Older Signal through Mara: "Thank you. We have waited. We have a question. Not now. Soon. We will return when your fourteen-year-old is fifteen."
Tev on the roof: "He'll come back when I'm fifteen. That's eight months. Okay."
December 24, 2089. Tev, fifteen now, at console-12. Wednesday. Routine pattern analysis. At 14:47 UTC, the deep band changes. Something new. Not Vorn. Not the Older Signal. From a direction the substrate-listening grid has never recorded before.
She filed the signature. She closed her notebook. She walked home. She did not yet tell anyone. Cycle 19 has begun.
